I have three goals for my agility photography:
1. Capture memorable moments for you and your canine partners
2. Provide quality photographs that can help you improve your runs
3. Capture some essence of the bond between the dog and the handler
I have been shooting pictures of fast moving things since I picked up a camera in the Republic of Viet Nam in 1969. It started with typical pictures of helicopters and airplanes. I started shooting pictures and studying light, lenses, focal lengths and the rest of it ever since. So, I have enjoyed shooting offshore powerboats, air races, horse races, car races...anyway, you get the idea. However, none of these were as exciting and close-up as agility canines. I really enjoy getting on the floor within 20 feet of the action. I especially enjoy watching Karen run our three kids.
The environment is tough for any action photography. The lighting is really bad. The dogs and handlers are moving fairly fast. There is usually dust and other stuff hanging in the air. All-in-all, it is a very challenging environment. But getting that exact shot of the dog suspended in the middle of a jump with the intensity and focus is extremely rewarding.
